9/11 out of the box

Filed under: Uncategorized — hipbone @ 12:54 pm

There hasn’t been much original thinking (in my opinion, anyway) around 9/11 and the War on Terror, but these two quotes struck me as exemplary… the first as an original and helpful response, the second as an original and helpful querying of a non-helpful response.

From a long gone Jihadist website… The disclaimer is intriguing since it demands that readers adhere to the writer’s interpretation of posted texts, and as for the quiz…

There are Twelve Imams

There are twelve Imams in Twelver Shi’ism, folks.

Science & Religion

I’d like to propose the following ratio: prediction is to prophecy as science is to religion. To my mind, the two quotes here nicely illustrate their innate kinship.

Non-violent Mahdi, militant Christ?

Weinland’s Christ is neither unique in His militancy nor entirely representative of Christian eschatology — Dr Anthony McRoy, for instance, in a paper delivered at the same conference as the Mahdist quote above, declares:

We do not find any idea of physical Sacred Violence in the New Testament. Jesus rejected physical force against His captors in Gethsemane, Matthew 26:52, noting that He could call on angelic legions if He wished. We also find that Christian Sacred Violence is not directed against human beings, but is of a spiritual nature, aimed at the demonic realm, Ephesians 6:12.

The extent of the Mahdi’s non-violence, too, is unclear — in the same paper cited here, the author writes:

Sufyaani will despatch his army to Mecca in order to destroy Imam Mahdi, however Imam Mahdi’s army will easily defeat Sufyaani’s army.

Tracing the variants of eschatological doctrines is a tricky business, but one that we are well advised to undertake if we are to understand the forces unfolding around us.

a special providence

I’m not sure whether or not these two quotes should be viewed as offering slightly different perspectives on the same general idea, but certainly both appear to me to fall under Hamlet’s dictum:

There’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow…
