Abbot Joachim of Fiore (circa1200) was the first great advocate of “end of the world” thinking in Catholic Christianity since St Augustine put it on the back burner, and also a very early user of conceptual diagrams to explain complex issues.

It may of course be that governmental bureaucracies simply take longer than ecclesiastical ones to arrive at a willingness to concede error — I prefer to believe that poetry is a greater threat than science to the status quo.
